You can tell a lot about a person based on what they read. Even a small collection can speak volumes about the type of person you are dealing with. (I can even get ideas about a person based on how they organize their book collection.) Whenever I visit someone's home, I take a look at what they read (if anything). It's the easiest way for me to spark up meaningful conversation and avoid small talk. Try asking someone why they are reading a particular title or what they think about it (if you've read it yourself). It is definitely one way to get to know a stranger, an old friend, or a new client.
